Berkshire XL vs XLT: Choosing Your Luxury Diesel Pusher
Berkshire Coach offers two distinct diesel pusher platforms: the XL series (34-40 feet) and the XLT series (45 feet with tag axle). Both deliver the luxury finishes and residential comfort that define the Berkshire brand, but they serve different buyers with different priorities.
Berkshire XL: Luxury Without Excess
The XL series ranges from 34 to 40 feet and rides on a Freightliner XCR chassis with the Cummins L9 engine producing 380HP. This platform hits the sweet spot for most buyers — enough interior space for extended travel, enough power for mountain passes and towing, and a manageable overall length for campground parking.
Popular floor plans include the 40E (quad-slide with a king bed and residential refrigerator), the 40D (theater seating and bunk-over-cab), and the 37A (shorter length with full luxury appointments). The XL's 4-slide configurations create genuinely wide-open interiors when deployed.
Berkshire XLT: The Ultimate Platform
The XLT is Berkshire's flagship — a 45-foot, tag-axle coach that competes with the most expensive diesel pushers on the market. The tag axle (third rear axle) provides additional stability, weight capacity, and a longer wheelbase that delivers an incredibly smooth highway ride. The XLT uses the same Cummins L9 but adds a larger fuel capacity, enhanced suspension, and the most spacious floor plans in the lineup.
The XLT 45E features four full-wall slides, creating a main living area that rivals a studio apartment. The 45CA adds a computer workstation alcove, and the 45G offers a rear entertainment lounge configuration.
Which One Is Right for You?
Choose the XL if you want luxury in a more manageable package, plan to camp at smaller campgrounds, and prefer easier urban driving. Choose the XLT if you prioritize maximum interior space, ride quality is paramount, and you're comfortable handling a 45-foot coach. Las Vegas buyers often choose the XLT for its highway stability on I-15 and I-40 — the tag axle makes a noticeable difference on long desert stretches.
